Comedian and actor Bill Bellamy will soon try his hand at the world of television again.

The 50-year-old Newark, New Jersey, native will star alongside Becki Newton (“How I Met Your Mother,” “Ugly Betty”) in a new family oriented sitcom pilot for Fox that takes a light-hearted look at an interracial family.

Bellamy will star as Jay “Havoc” Hammond, an ex-NFL player who recently moved in with his White wife, Christy (Newton) and her two sons. The show is reported to follow the ups and downs Hammond encounters as he struggles to adjust to his new role as a stepfather.

According to Variety: “Bellamy’s character is described as a tough, ex-NFL player who has retired from the field and is looking to move into the sports announcer side of the business. He tries to respect Christy’s wish that he let her be the disciplinarian to his two step-sons, but when he feels like she’s allowing the kids to get away with too much, he steps in with comic results, but also manages to get through to the kids.”

Famed director Malcolm D. Lee will helm the untitled sitcom project that will be written and executive produced by Chris Case with industry veteran Chris Spencer serving as an executive producer as well.

The show will mark Bellamy’s first leading sitcom role since his underappreciated show, “Mr Box Office,” ended in 2013. Since then, Bellamy has kept himself busy guesting on a number shows, including “Hot In Cleveland” and “Murder in the First.”

Bellamy came to fame in the early ’90s as an MTV VJ and stand-up comedian, famously coining the phrase “booty call” on HBO’s “Def Comedy Jam.” He’s also built quite the film résumé starring in such notable films as Any Given Sunday, How to Be a Player, Love Jones, and The Brothers. His next film will be the soon to be released Kindergarten Cop 2 with Dolph Lundgren.

The untitled Fox sitcom project is set to test with audiences later in the fall.
