Leatha Curington is one of Dr. John C. Lipman’s patients who has undergone the uterine fibroid embolization procedure. Dr. Lipman is a board certified Interventional Radiologist. Curington talks about her experience with fibroids and how she found out about the UFE procedure.

How long have you suffered with fibroids?
I did the math. It shocked and appalled me that I’ve suffered in silence with fibroids for 34 years. If I saved a dime for as many female products that I’ve used in the course of this trauma, I’d be a millionaire. Some may think trauma is too harsh a word but for me it was a very debilitating, depressing experience. Outside of the severe anemia due to extreme blood loss was the emotional scars it left behind.

What options did your doctor give you?
My very skilled female practitioner, nonchalantly advised me that a hysterectomy was the only option available for me. The blow was so hard I felt like she kicked me in my chest. Only after I could catch my breath did I timidly ask for a second option. She reluctantly referred me to a specialist.

Why did you choose not to move forward with the option your doctor suggested to you?
The specialist suggested a series of injections that cost $1,500 each to shrink the fibroids, endometrial ablation [burning of the uterine wall] or a myomectomy.

I was a recently divorced, middle-aged woman who still believed God would bless me with my soul mate and the ability to conceive, carry and deliver a child. Tall order right? I know, but Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” Although I wasn’t even dating at the time, I had faith and refused to give up on my dream.

How did you find out about Dr. Lipman’s UFE procedure?
I found out about Dr. Lipman by watching the “Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Ms. Cynthia Bailey boldly shared her story and I was moved to tears, because I could relate. I think I was so excited I called during the commercial break to get more information. I was invited to their “White Party” where women from all walks of life came to share their stories naked and unashamed. It had to be close to 500 women present whose life had been impacted by fibroids. From my own research and testimonials of the women present I was sold on the procedure before Dr. Lipman even spoke.

How long have you been seeing your doctor?
I had been going to my female practitioner for over five years. We have candidly shared my struggles over my divorce, weight loss.

Did you discuss the UFE procedure with your doctor? If so, what was her response?
I did discuss my personal findings from the research I conducted in addition to what the specialist suggested with my female practitioner. I also shared with her for the first time the significant impact fibroids have played in my life and my “faith of a mustard seed” desire to bear a child. We painstakingly looked at the pros and cons of all the options and she provided authorization for the procedure so that It would be covered by my insurance.

How do you feel after the UFE procedure and how long has it been since your procedure?
March 9, 2014 is the day I got the procedure done. I celebrate it like my birthday, because of the significant difference it’s made in my life. I now have the confidence to wear white as much as I like because I’m no longer haunted by excessive bleeding mishaps. GOD does answer prayers, and sometimes they come in the least likely of ways. He did send me my soul mate- made just for me and at 48 I’m living life to the fullest. I’m so grateful that Ms. Cynthia Bailey was willing to share her pain and struggle because it gave me the courage I needed to explore UFE as an option.

Anything you would like to add about Dr. John Lipman and his staff?
Dr. Lipman and his staff work diligently to confirm that you understand every step of the process. They went out of their way to ensure my comfort and gave me the tools I needed to succeed. I absolutely encourage anyone struggling with fibroids before you get a hysterectomy, to setup an appointment to discuss the possibilities at the Uterine Fibroid Center you won’t be disappointed.
