Nicki Minaj gave fans quite a shock this week when she appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and claimed that she didn’t want to say that she was in a relationship with her boyfriend, Meek Mill, anymore. Not surprisingly, fans and bloggers alike took sound-bites and quotes from the article and the story blew up into news that Minaj had broken up with Mill. However, Minaj recently decided to clarify her comments and silence critics once and for all.
As previously reported, DeGeneres asked the rapper if she is engaged to Mill, which Minaj quickly denied. And when DeGeneres asked Minaj if she’s ready to take her relationship with Mill to the next step, Minaj replied that she’s unsure and that she wants to keep her romantic life out of the press because of the scrutiny and criticism she always receives about her relationships.
“I used to say, ‘I’m not in a relationship,’ even though I was in a 12-year relationship [with Safaree Samuels] … Now I feel like just going back to that and saying, ‘You know what? I’m single.’ ”
She added, “For instance, Valentine’s Day passed and I didn’t put up my Valentine’s Day gift on Instagram. People said, ‘They’re not together.’ We were getting anonymous messages saying, ‘She wasn’t with him. She was crying all day.’ They put up all these things. Meanwhile, we were really in bed all day on Valentine’s Day.
“You just have to do you and make yourself happy and forget about trying to get everyone’s approval. It’s better just to keep those things sacred,” Minaj continued. “So, now, I don’t really care to say ‘I’m in a relationship’ or ‘I’m engaged’ or whatever. There’s a boy that likes me. That’s all.”
Unfortunately for Minaj, many fans took pieces of her comments out of context and began spreading rumors that she had broken up with Mill. However, Minaj recently went on Instagram and shot down all of the rumors that her relationship with her boyfriend is over.
“#They don’t want me to write this caption. Cc @djkhaled ~ It would be very remiss of you to not watch what I said about Valentines Day prior to writing or believing a headline about my comment. I’m not single. Thank you for coming out. Have a blessed day and get some D.”
Well, clearly Minaj and Mill are still going strong. As she says, though, she’d rather keep her romantic life private as opposed to open and vulnerable to the public.
