Over 1 million people have signed a petition vowing to boycott Target retail stores due to their new transgender-friendly bathroom policy.

The American Family Association (AFA) created a boycotting pledge stating that Target’s recent rule to accommodate people of all gender identities is unsafe. As of May 1, the petition has reached 1,123,887 signatures.

“Target’s policy is exactly how sexual predators get access to their victims,” the AFA pledge states. “And with Target publicly boasting that men can enter women’s bathrooms, where do you think predators are going to go?

“Clearly, Target’s dangerous new policy poses a danger to wives and daughters. We think many customers will agree. And we think the average Target customer is willing to pledge to boycott Target stores until it makes protecting women and children a priority.”

On April 19, Target announced that its customers would be allowed to use the restroom of the gender that they identify with, rather than the gender that corresponds with their biological sex.

“We believe that everyone — every team member, every guest, and every community — deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally,” a message from Target reads. “In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.”

Target’s mentions on social media are filled with former customers voicing their displeasure with the retailer’s restroom policy. But not everyone is in agreement with the decision to boycott.

According to the Christian Post, Presbyterian Lay Committee President Carmen Fowler LaBerge said, “Instead of boycotting, why not call on Target to insure the safety of women and girls while they are also providing reasonable accommodation to transgender individuals? Instead of widening the chasm why not find the common concern of privacy and safety which stands at the center of concern for both groups?”

Do you agree with Target’s restroom policy? Will you be boycotting Target?
