Having suffered with depression, Shanti Das takes an activist role

Well-known entertainment executive, Shanti Das launched her Silence the Shame initiative. Silence the Shame plans to banish the stigmatization of mental health issues while encouraging people to seek treatment and support.

This initiative is important to the music industry veteran because she has personally suffered with depression over the years and dealt with her father’s suicide. Das hopes to spark a national conversation that will lead to increased awareness and funding to support those living with mental health conditions. Das is enlisting the help of some of her celebrity friends and colleagues to jump-start the conversation. One of the initiative’s first ambassadors is media mogul Nick Cannon, with many more to follow.

Das has an extensive 25-year music industry career. Starting as an intern and working her way up to executive vice president, Das has held positions at Capital Records, Sony Music, LaFace Records, Columbia Records, and Universal Motown, where she worked directly with some of music’s top talent, such as: OutKast, Usher, Prince, TLC, Toni Braxton, Erykah Badu, and more. Currently, Das is the founder/CEO of Press Reset Entertainment, an Atlanta-based entertainment firm that provides independent marketing and strategy for musicians, talent booking, celebrity procurement, brand marketing and event assistance. The self-proclaimed, Hip-Hop Professional® is not new to philanthropic initiatives and events, Das curated the No Reservations Needed (food drive for the homeless), Samples That Serve (collection of toiletries), Backpack Blessings (collection of back to school supplies), Day of Pampering (beauty pampering for moms), Toys of Joy (hospital toy drive), and Turn The Page (book drive and reading program). Silence the Shame is Das’ most personal venture yet.

Silence The Shame could not have come at a better time — May is Mental Health Awareness Month. While mental health awareness is a national concern, Das’ and Cannon’s participation in the initiative is critical to bringing attention to this topic within the entertainment industry. Often the worlds of music, movies, television and fashion have suffered from the loss and destruction of the most talented individuals. Today, entertainers often fear discussing their struggles with mental wellness because of cyber bullying, damaging celebrity gossip, and the loss of work. Silence the Shame aims to liberate anyone who feels suppressed discussing their mental wellness. Shanti Das will be doing a speaking tour this summer and fall discussing Silence the Shame and will enlist the help of doctors, mental health professionals, people living with mental health issues, and the parents of children affected.
