Chene Park’s Amphitheater was packed to capacity as the culturally diverse crowd anticipated the arrival of Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz for Summer Jamz 19 in Detroit. The atmosphere was just right for one of the biggest concerts of the summer in Detroit as the cool breeze blew in off the Detroit River, and the sun set over the Windsor, Canada, skyline just across the border. Detroit’s 107.5 DJs were on deck to keep the crowd hyped and moving, by engaging them in a “eastside vs. westside” verbal battle of which side of the city repped the hardest, the westside won.
As the chants grew louder and the warm night air set in, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne took the stage. The crowd roared with approval as they individually stepped onto the stage. Their concert gear was simple; a T-shirt and jeans for both superstar rappers. 2 Chainz wouldn’t have been true to his name if he hadn’t worn two or more chains, which he donned during his performance. And Little Wayne wouldn’t have been nearly rad enough if he hadn’t brought his skateboard with him on stage to show the crowd his gnarly skater moves.
The larger-than-life rappers performed hit after hit, as they alternated rocking the mike one after another. The crowd seemed to fall right in line as they recited lyric after lyric and sang along to every song. 2 Chainz rapped to familiar cuts such as ‘I’m Different,” and “Birthday Song,” while Wayne effortlessly smashed hits like “Sky’s The Limit” and the club banger “Mrs. Officer.” The dynamic duo collaborated on several songs, such as Chris Brown’s “Loyal,” O.T. Genasis’ hit song “Cut It,” Uncle Luke’s song “Don’t Stop (Get it, Get it), and Chedda Da Connect’s unofficial dirty South anthem “Flicka Da Wrist,” which had the crowd jumping up and down in the aisles.
The concert ended with the rap duo saluting the crowd after over an hour and a half of performing. The two then headed to the after-party.
