Nick Cannon came under fire earlier this month when rumors began floating that he was holding up his divorce from his famous wife Mariah Carey. Since then, Cannon has publicly denied the accusations, but he recently decided to comment on the rumors again with an increasingly popular freestyle called “Divorce Papers.” Now, Cannon is opening up about the record and explaining why he created it.

In the song, which Cannon released this week, the media mogul shares some deeply personal details about life after his split from Carey and how it’s not always easy being a single father.

“We single now but we really need to think about is how a child deals/ how a child feels/ because we got two and they brilliant for real/ resilient for real,” he raps at one point in the song.

“My daughter said daddy why your eyes in tears/ because last time I dropped your brother off I didn’t get a call the next day and it felt like years/ and Ima be honest/ sometimes I hate to hear you’re on the other line having fun without me/ I wonder if my son will ever doubt me…/ What’s love I don’t care about it I just want my kids to be safe,” he later raps.

In a new interview with Karen Civil, Cannon opened up about his new freestyle and explained that he created the song as a way to vent his frustrations about the way the media has portrayed him in the divorce. Cannon shared that he created the song over a week ago and decided to release to set the record straight on how he feels about Carey and their family.

“My ex and I are in a great place and are diligently moving things along so we both can continue to be happy. I am happy for her and all her new endeavors, both personal ones and professional ones. I sincerely hope the media doesn’t once again try to manipulate my words or my purpose for releasing this song. As the world knows, I am an open book and I’m proud of that. When it comes to expressing myself, I take the fearless approach and that’s what I chose to do here,” Cannon said.

“As Father’s Day approaches this weekend, I’ve been reflecting quite a bit on my life as a father and how I want to be the best one I can be, the way my father figures were to me. So with that said, I just ask that the public continues to respect our process and remain patient and loving as me and my family aim for happiness,” he said.
