Miami Marlins pitcher José Fernández, 24, was once engaged to ex-Miami Marlins cheerleader Carla Mendoza in April. Today, Maria Arias, 24, is pregnant with a girl.
Both ladies are grieving his sudden death. Fernández, alongside friends Eduardo “Eddy” Rivero, 25, and Emilio Macias, 27, were killed when Fernandez’s 32-foot SeaVee fishing boat crashed into a jetty sometime before 3 a.m. Sunday morning, September 25, 2016 as it traveled southbound back toward Miami Beach. Authorities say speed was a factor.
Arias is a former college psychology major who is due to deliver the in February 2017. She lived with Fernández in downtown Miami.
Fernandez and Mendoza dated for three years and were engaged before their split.
Both Mendoza and Arias were at Fernandez’s mother’s house in Miami hours after the crash.
In a social media post by Will Bernal, he indicated Fernandez was distressed on the night he and two friends were killed. He’d had a fight with his girlfriend.
Arias has declined to comment about the baby. But her cousin by marriage,Magaly Junco, is telling it all. “He wanted to name the baby girl Penelope. She is due in February and they were living together in his apartment in downtown Miami. They were very excited about having a baby.”
The loose lipped cousin by marriage also revealed Arias met Fernandez through her sister’s husband, Jessie Garcia, a professional deep sea fisherman who had become Fernandez’s close friend.
Maria Lourdes Reyes his ex Carla Mendoza’s mother said back in November, Fernandez promised to marry Mendoza. But they argued about the timing. “She wanted to get married after she graduated from nursing school in May 2017. Jose said his agent didn’t him to get married until he got a new contract in two years. He just wanted to wait longer than she was willing to wait.”
