Afropunk is the pre-eminent cultural festival for Black millennials who embrace their uniqueness. After its humble beginnings in Brooklyn, New York, the festival has expanded to London, Paris and it recently touched down in the Black Mecca, Atlanta.
The three-day festival took place at 787 Windsor located in the Mechanicsville neighborhood in Atlanta. Rolling out was on hand to capture every moment. Here are the five coolest moments from Afropunk’s Carnival of Consciousness in Atlanta.
The performances
More than 50 artists and DJs performed during the three-day weekend. Standout performances included SZA, Tyler the Creator, Gallant, St. Beauty, Earl Sweatshirt, and Kelela. Notable DJ sets included Martina McFlyy, DJ Hourglass, and DJ Mike G.
The art
There were several awe-inspiring art installations at Afropunk. Fabian Williams featured pieces which included Luke Cage inside of an American flag which served as a cage; “CopVision 2” which depicted the thoughts of a racist cop who decides if a Black man deserves to live or die; and “Fundraisotron” which displayed a cop shooting a Black man whose body will eventually fall on a scale that will raise money for police.
The style
Style is the greatest form of expression at Afropunk. Attendees took the opportunity to wear outfits that featured an array of colors and textures. They also wore clothing that paid tribute to Black heritage and culture.
The hair
Men and women wore Afros, locs, braids, and vibrant hair colors as natural hairstyles made powerful statements.
The experience
Overall, the experience at Afropunk allowed attendees to party, become exposed to cool art, and take pride in themselves while embracing the uniqueness of Black culture worldwide.
