Many of us know Mathew Knowles as the father of arguably the most famous woman on the planet, Beyoncé, who just wrapped her sold-out, 49-show Formation world tour earlier this month. But Knowles has — and still does — wear many different hats. From a father, to a grandfather, professor, best-selling author, record label owner, and real estate developer, he has seemingly done it all. Knowles, who is the founder, president and CEO of Music World Entertainment, has experienced tremendous success in music, film, television, fashion and so much more. Rolling Out spoke exclusively with Knowles about his book, The DNA of Achievers: 10 Traits of Highly Successful Professionals, learning from your failures, something Beyoncé has done in the past, and his new group Blushhh Music at Circle of Sisters Expo in New York City.

Knowles discussed failure at his empowering session with mostly women at the Circle of Sisters, an event produced by New York radio stations WBLS, WLIB and Hot 97. “We played an incredible video with Beyoncé talking about one of the traits, [which] is learning from failure. Because most people don’t realize, even with a Beyoncé, how many times she’s failed and didn’t give up because failure is an opportunity to grow, not a reason to quit.”

Knowles discussed a few of the 10 traits with us. “One of those traits is being a visionary. I’ve been fortunate in the music industry to have been a visionary with Destiny’s Child and Trin-i-tee 5:7, and now again with a girl group.” Knowles compared Blushhh Music, a female trio made up of a vocalist and two rappers who performed at Circle of Sisters, to three very successful artists. “Think Beyoncé, Mc Lyte and Left Eye [of TLC].”

One of the best tips that Knowles gave is one of the 10 traits mentioned in his book and a simple one that far too many don’t utilize. “It starts with passion, because when you live your passion, you never work a day of your life,” Knowles said. Throughout his career, Knowles has repeatedly shown and continues to show that he and his famous offspring have the DNA of achievers.
