Mariah Carey and James Packer have called off their engagement.
“Mariah and James had a fight in Greece, and have not seen each other since,” a rep for the singer told “Entertainment Tonight.” “The fight was not because of any cheating allegations or excessive spending by Mariah. James is one of the most successful businessmen in the world. They are trying to work it out. Right now, they’re not sure if they will stay together. They are discussing it, and plan to release an official statement together about their future.”
The news comes shortly after TMZ reported that a possible split occurred after an incident that went down on a yacht during a recent vacation to Greece. “Something really bad” happened, involving Carey’s assistant, that prompted the superstar to ditch the trip and head back to Los Angeles, a source told the entertainment site. Meanwhile, Woman’s Day reported that the Australian businessman, 49, allegedly dumped Carey after they had a falling out over her upcoming reality show, “Mariah’s World,” and her over-the-top spending habits. However, neither party has confirmed either claim.
In the meantime, the five-time Grammy winner has canceled her upcoming South American tour dates, citing promoter negligence. “Devastated my shows in Chile, Argentina & Brazil had to be canceled,” she tweeted on Tuesday, Oct. 25. “My fans deserve better than how some of these promoters treated them.”
As previously reported, Packer popped the question in Carey’s hometown on Thursday, Jan. 21 with a gigantic 35-carat sparkler. “They fell head over heels in love with one another. It’s crazy how perfect they are together, they both know it and couldn’t be happier,” revealed one source at the time. “As soon as their friendship turned romantic, they have wanted to spend every moment together. They have a connection that is unparalleled; it’s been a very beautiful experience for them both. If you spend even five minutes with them, you can’t help but believe in true love,” added a second source.
Of course, this isn’t the first relationship to go sour for Carey. In 2008, she married actor Nick Cannon. But, after six years of wedded bliss, the couple called it quits in August 2014. They share 5-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe. Carey was also married to record exec Tommy Mottola for five years from 1993 to 1998. Packer, on the other hand, has also been married twice, to Jodhi Meares from 1999 to 2002 and to Erica Packer from 2007 to 2013.
