Madonna expands her empire.
Last month, rumor had it that the singer, 58, had been given the green light to adopt 4-year-old orphaned twins by the High Court from Malawi. Though she denied reports at the time, on Tuesday, Feb. 7, multiple outlets claimed that the pop star appeared in court alongside her lawyer, as well as the twins’ father and uncle, who witnessed the adoption.
Meanwhile, a rep for Madonna told People that “Their mother died a week after she delivered the babies” in August 2012. “After their mother died, the children were looked after by their grandmother, who could not fully provide for them, so they were taken into an orphanage.”
According to media reports, the twins, named Stella and Esther, spent a good portion of their childhood at the Home of Hope orphanage in Mchinji, near the western border of Zambia. According to reports, Home of Hope happens to be the same public institution dedicated to the care of orphans, where her son David Banda lived prior to his own adoption. Up next, it’s said that the twins will travel to the states with Madonna, accompanied by a government official who will ensure whether she can provide a suitable home for the pair.

As for Madonna’s ties to Malawi, in 2006, she established Raising Malawi, an organization dedicated to “orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi through health, education and community support,” their website states. In addition to building schools and strengthening hospitals, this year the foundation plans to build the country’s first pediatric surgery and intensive care unit, the Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care.
“Madonna has been very close to Malawi,” Mvula told People. “She has been involved in so many projects and is currently helping to expand the children’s ward at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital. So Madonna has been coming to Malawi frequently. So it is not unusual to people in Malawi at all. They know Madonna very well in terms of the high-profile work she has done for the community.”
In the meantime, Stella and Esther will be welcomed with open arms by Madonna’s other children, Lourdes Leon, 20, Rocco Ritchie, 16, and adopted children 11-year-old son David Banda and daughter Mercy James, whom she adopted from the country in 2008 and 2009.
