The OWN Network dominated amongst TV contenders this past weekend at the NAACP Image Awards. Not only did “Queen Sugar” win for Best drama series; Ava DuVernay received the Outstanding Writing award for Best Drama Series, as well. The icing on the cake was for the female writer/director to also receive an award for Outstanding Netflix Documentary, 13th. The theme “outstanding” premiated right down to the acceptance speech delivered by actor Omar J Dorsey, who’s character is Hollywood in “Queen Sugar.” Dorsey stole the show with his passionate speech about how great the times in the industry: “First and foremost, we want to thank the Image Awards for like recognizing us the first year. So many great shows, such a great time to be an actor and writer and a director in this space right now. On behalf of Oprah Winfrey, on behalf of the OWN Network, on behalf of Warner, on behalf of the greatest woman in the industry Ava DuVernay, I wanna say thank you!”

On the red carpet Dorsey, credited the success of the show to DuVernay’s understanding of men. This allows her to place the men in the show in the right settings for viewers to fall in love with their roles. Each of the male characters on the show is different but reflect the qualities we see today in men.
