It was a day of mixed emotions for the families of young Takiya Holmes and Darvece Monson. The 11-year-old Takiya was recently a victim of senseless gun violence in Chicago. Turning tragedy into triumph, the Holmes family selflessly donated Takiya’s kidneys to her cousin, Darvece Monson, a nurse, model and kidney transplant candidate. Now adding survivor to her long list of accomplishments, Monson is the CEO of More Than Your Kidneys foundation.

For years, Monson has been extremely transparent about her struggles to secure a kidney. she has even considered alternative options. As she mourned with her family the loss of young Takiya, they realized her prayers were finally answered when they learnedthat Holmes was a match and without a second thought, the family agreed to donate her organs to save Monson’s life. Although it is utterly disheartening for such a young and precious life to be cut short, it is comforting to know that young Takiyah will live on through the beautiful Monson.

According to her family, Monson’s surgery went well and she is recuperating. We look forward to more greatness from Monson and her organization. For more information on the More Than Your Kidneys foundation, kindly visit www.morethanyourkidneys.org.
