A white man who attempted to commit acts of terrorism on Black men was arrested in New York. According to the Washington Post, James Harris Jackson was a racist who traveled from Maryland to New York to kill Black men.

On March 20, Jackson approached Timothy Caughman, 66,  around 11 p.m. and stabbed him several times. Caughman was able to walk to a police precinct, but he eventually died from the stab wounds. One day following the attack, Jackson walked into a police precinct near Times Square and told authorities that he committed murder.

Police recovered several knives from Jackson. A military vet, Jackson rode a Bolt bus from Baltimore to New York with the purpose of killing Black men.

Jackson’s crime reveals how White terrorism remains an issue in America. President Trump and other government officials have often focused on Islamic terrorism as a way to shape the narrative when it comes to terrorism. However, domestic terrorism is far more harmful to U.S. citizens. Since 9/11, only 10 terrorist attacks have occurred on American soil where Muslims were viewed as suspects, according to New America Foundation.

However, there were 5,818 hate crime incidents and 7,121 victims in in 2015 alone, according to FBI stats. Nearly 60 percent of the victims were attacked because of their race. Since Trump’s election, hate crimes have spiked across the nation.

So instead of creating a travel ban to stop Islamic terrorism, that rarely occurs, and building a wall at the border of Mexico, Trump and the U.S. Justice Department should focus their efforts on stopping domestic terrorism by racist White men.

Caughman was an autograph collector who met and took pictures with celebrities such as Oprah, Shari Headley, and Russell Simmons.

Jackson was charged with a hate crime and second degree murder.
