Their mission is for people to enjoy themselves over a great cocktail and they have a standing reputation for having their customized drinks add a “branded touch” to their events. Their bartenders are licensed, insured and always ready to provide their signature “Sumptuous Experience.”
Rolling out talked with the owner, Lauren Daniels, to get the inside details on her journey. Daniels, the youngest owner of a mobile bartending service in Detroit, discussed what her business is all about and talked about where she sees her business in five years. Tell us about Sumptuous Spirits. What is it and what services do you offer?
Sumptuous Spirits is a full-service mobile bartending company that provides bartending, bar catering, and cocktail waitressing services for corporate events, private and social events, and life celebrations in the metro-Detroit area. We launched officially in April, 2016. To date, we’ve had the opportunity to work with the Lip Bar, Bamboo Detroit, Detroit Young Professionals, The Powerful Women, just to name a few. We specialize in custom cocktail creation and superior service, two components that are essential to a great event.
Congrats on one year of operation. What major obstacles did you have to overcome to get to where you are today?
Thank you! We’re excited to celebrate our first successful year in business. We will be celebrating May 6 in downtown Detroit [in a private location – see website for details]. We will have great food, music, tastings from Michigan-based beverage brands, and of course festive cocktails crafted for the celebration.
In the course of building a business, you truly learn the meaning of sacrifice and dedication. This means long nights, early days, being financially invested, and you don’t have as much time to hang with friends and family as you once did. One of my strengths as a businesswoman is time management; This was truly tested once I started my business. I am currently still working as a corporate auditor and graduate student, so I had to learn how to prioritize my time and make things work.
What inspired the idea to start a mobile bartending service?
In college, I was the go-to person for making drinks for events. Once I graduated and moved back home to Detroit in 2012, I noticed that the title of “bartender” stuck with me. I figured out that there is a need for bartending services for events that aren’t at a restaurant or bar. In January 2016 I attended bartending school and started Sumptuous Spirits LLC shortly after.
You brand your business as a luxury bartending service. What makes your services luxury?
We provide an upscale atmosphere by providing superior service and craft cocktails; ensuring the host and their attendees are catered to. The word “Sumptuous” means lavish, expensive, opulent, and we tailor our services to ensure our services and brand reflect that.
How do you differentiate yourself from your competition?
We are more than just your typical bartending service; we provide our client and their guests with the “sumptuous” experience. We tailor our cocktails and service to the needs of the event. We take the time out to learn about the client, their event, the guests and create a menu that complements the occasion. Other than the celebration itself, what people remember most about an event is how great the drinks are. We want to make sure that any guest that attends a Sumptuous Spirits bartended event receives the sumptuous experience.
We also host a series of monthly events in which we collaborate with other businesses. Our events bring a community of people together to network and socialize while enjoying a great cocktail! We’ve hosted events for fashion, business, networking, and more. We truly believe that community, cross-promotion, and collaboration are keys to success.
How do you book potential clients? How do potential clients find you?
A majority of our clients are obtained via word of mouth or they’ve attended events that we’ve bartended. Once people see us in action, they are interested in having us host their events.
Where do you see your company in five years?
I envision Sumptuous Spirits being the go-to bartending service for events in the metro Detroit area. I also see Sumptuous Spirits taking over the bartending market in other emerging cities throughout the country. We are currently in the process of developing some other ventures under the Sumptuous Spirits brand, so stay tuned!
