At an exclusive viewing event, Atlantans got a first look at the newest season of “About Him,” a Signal 23 Television series depicting the challenges homosexual males face trying to change societal perspectives of gay people. The event took place during the Sunday Escape event at Atlanta’s Suite Lounge venue on Luckie Street and was sponsored by the NAESM organization.
During the first hour of the screening, episode one of season two was debuted to the crowd. The debut of the premiere episode kept everyone in the room on the edge of their seats. Season two, “The Revolution,” is focused on the discovery of oneself, and depicts how that discovery can lead to freedom from societal oppression. The series not only defends gay culture but creates an avenue where all people can find comfort in just being true to themselves.
Set in the 1980s on a college campus, “About Him” puts a creative spin on the word “Revolution.” Revolution is used to describe the characters’ ability to overcome and break through racial barriers, and the mistreatment associated with sexual preference. Depictions and clips of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. were placed throughout the main teaser for the new season. The teaser boasted a number of King’s empowering quotes about social equality and more.
By following the characters, “About Him” unveils how difficult, and emotionally taxing just being true to oneself can be. Much like the new main character, Gary “Dustin” LaVard, many of the other characters take viewers on a journey through their lives in order to change people’s mindsets and break through social barriers.
As the plot develops, Devin witnesses the treatment of homosexual men in the ’80s and meets a group of gentlemen much like himself. They are all battling the same sexual and racial injustices causing them to unite and fight for gay rights and equality on their college campus.
