'The Rap Game' heats up Detroit with SoSoSummer pre-tour kickoff
The Rap Game (Nova, Miss Mulatto and Mani)

On Thursday, May 11, the SoSoSummer 17 pre-tour kicked off with a bang in Detroit as the pre-tour visited several local area middle and high schools including Cass Technical High School, Renaissance High School and Detroit Academy of Arts and Science. The event, presented by Jermaine Dupri, included live performances by Miss Mulatto, Mani and Nova, season one, two and three winners of Dupri’s hit TV show, “The Rap Game,” as well as fellow rap artist DLOW. They all performed to a standing crowd of over 300 screaming young fans in attendance that all received a treat Thursday at Franklin Wright Settlements in Detroit as the last stop before the next city.

The performances started out with Mani featuring Miss Mulatto and Nova performing their hit single “You Thought.” Following DLOW’s performance of his hit single “Do It Like Me,” all the So So Def artists individually performed their latest released singles as the crowd rappe  to every word throughout the performances. One fan even received a special treat, as she was greeted with a personal surprise from Nova as he embraced her while singing and sang happy birthday to her in front of the entire audience. He even Snapchatted himself singing to her. The crowd became wilder as Miss Mulatto, Mani and Nova hit their fans with some of their hottest released singles like “Couch”, “You Thought” and “Riding My Wave.”

Before the So So Def crew hit the road for the next stop on their pre-tour kickoff, rolling out Magazine was able to catch up with the season one, two and three winners of the popular TV show for an exclusive interview a few minutes before hitting the stage:

How is it working with Jermaine Dupri, one of the best-known rap living legends of all time? What is he like?
Miss Mulatto: Overall, it’s been super special being from Atlanta. Growing up I already knew who JD was and to follow in his footsteps is cool.
Mani: It’s a blessing because to know and be on the show with a legend and now to work with him is such a blessing. He has worked with artist such as Kris Kross, Chris Brown, TLC, Mariah Carey, and to work with him is great.
Nova: It’s good to be able to step in the studio with him and get vibes off of him and it’s great vibes.

Describe your sound and classify it.
MM: Mine is similar to my style; it’s all about the girls. My music and style is for the girls.
M: My sound is laid back, but also fun. So, you can still get hype off of my laid back style.
N: I feel my music is describing aggression. I have a wide spectrum of music that I can do but I like to stick to suave and aggression.

Describe your style of dress.
MM: Everything for me is just about the girls. I’m a girly girl, so you are always going to see me in glitter, pink and shining.
M: Clean cut and fresh.
N: I have the whole Philly swag, it’s my city so I recreate the style.

Where do you guys see yourself in five years?
MM: Better than I am today. I have a clothing store in Atlanta [PITTSTOP] and I want to expand to create stores throughout the country. As far as music goes, I want to be mainstream and take it as far as it goes.
M: Being a mainstream artist, successful and creating businesses outside of music also acting one day.
N: I want to be the best in the world in the next five years. I take risks and I consistently think about what I want to become. I want Grammy’s and number one charts singles.

Where can fans find you on social media?
MM: @iammissmulatto on Instagram and you can also find me through my website missmulatto.net.
M: @da_realmani on Twitter and Instagram and the officialmani.com.
N: @therealestnova on all social media.

Fans in Detroit can catch Miss Mulatto, Mani, Nova and more on May 26 at the Fox Theater for the SoSoSUMMER 17 tour.
