The late, legendary rapper Tupac Shakur broke off his relationship with former pop queen Madonna because of her race.
The icon, whose life is played out in the hit movie All Eyez on Me, poured out his heart to the singer in a very enlightening letter he wrote while he was in jail.
According to TMZ, Tupac wrote, “For you to be seen with a black man wouldn’t in any way jeopardize your career, if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting.”
The rapper also wrote, “But for me at least in my previous perception I felt due to my ‘image’ I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was.”
Tupac seems to know that he devastated Madonna by the rejection, saying, “I never meant to hurt you.”
The note will go up for auction July 19–28 at Gotta Have Rock and Roll. Starting bid is $100K and it’s expected to fetch a lot more. The last letter written by Tupac sold for more than $170K
Tupac and Madonna reportedly met each other for the first time in March 1993 at the Soul Train Music Awards in Los Angeles after being introduced by Do the Right Thing actress Rosie Perez, the singer revealed to Howard Stern on his Sirius XM radio show.
Perez confirmed in April 2014 that the longstanding whispers about a relationship between Madonna and Tupac were true during an appearance on “The Wendy Williams Show.”
Perez described how the meeting went down.
She said all eyes were on her when she arrived hand in hand with Tupac at the Soul Train Awards on March 9, 1993, and their appearance together sparked some animosity from other women at the event.
Though they were close, Perez claims she and 2Pac were never romantically involved.
Instead, she said, he accompanied her to the awards ceremony when her date stood her up.
It turns out that Madonna who was also at the awards show came over to Perez and told her she’d like to be introduced.
“I said she wants to meet you and he goes, ‘Hook that up,’ ” Perez recounted.
“I hooked it up and I was very happy about it.”
Neither Perez nor Madonna revealed how long the two dated or how serious the relationship got, but it was reportedly over by February 1995.
That was the time Tupac began serving a prison sentence after being convicted of first-degree sexual abuse stemming from an incident in November 1993.
In her 2007 unauthorized book Like An Icon, Lucy O’Brien claimed that the “Like A Prayer” singer not only dated the “Me Against The World” rapper but wanted a baby with him.
