DMX's downfall: A timeline of his drama-filled career

A judge has ordered DMX, whose real name is Earl Simmons, to be placed on house arrest and equipped with an ankle monitor.

On Friday, Aug. 11, the rapper was found guilty of violating the conditions of his bail by failing drug tests ☺ he tested positive for cocaine and was found to have cannabis in his system — and left the state of New York without court permission.

As previously reported, DMX was recently arrested and charged with tax evasion and fraud — charges which could land him in the clinker for more than 40 years if convicted on all counts.

While the rapper has not yet commented on the new offense. As previously reported, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the IRS revealed that the 46-year-old rapper surrendered to law enforcement agents in mid-July, after being suspected of “engaging in a multi-year scheme to conceal millions of dollars of income from the IRS and to avoid paying $1.7 million of tax liabilities.”

“For years, Earl Simmons, the recording artist and performer known as DMX, made millions from his chart-topping songs, concert performances and television shows,” said acting U.S. Attorney Joon H. Kim. “But while raking in millions from his songs, including his 2003 hit ‘X Gon’ Give it to Ya,’ DMX didn’t give any of it to the IRS. Far from it, DMX allegedly went out of his way to evade taxes, including by avoiding personal bank accounts, setting up accounts in other’s names and paying personal expenses largely in cash.”

The spokesperson said that he was at one point offered treatment for drug addiction but refused, telling authorities that he could stay sober on his own.

According to multiple reports, when authorities contacted the Ruff Ryder in late July he stated he was in Chicago. However, days later, he left a voicemail indicating he’d jetted to St. Louis to deal with a family emergency. He reportedly returned to New York in late August.

This isn’t the first time DMX’s shenanigans have made headlines. In fact, from multiple arrests to robbery accusations and tax fraud, the rapper just can’t seem to catch a break. For a timeline of his drama-filled career, keep scrolling.

2004: DMX and an accomplice smashed his sports utility vehicle into a gate at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after he told an attendant he was a federal agent. Upon his arrest, police found a handgun, nightstick, cocaine, Oxycodone, and Diazepam in his possession, according to The Daily Beast.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a controlled substance, criminal mischief, driving under the influence, menacing, impersonation, and endangering the welfare of a child. He struck a plea deal — six weeks behind bars for violating parole.

2010: His marriage to now-ex-wife Tashera Simmons began crumbling.

2013: The “X Gon Give It To Ya” recording artist declared chapter 11 bankruptcy due to outstanding child support payments.

2014: Though not a criminal offense, one of the most bizarre encounters with X occurred when the rapper admitted eating dog food, to TMZ. He went on to note that canned variations smell the most edible.

2015: The rapper who appeared in films like Belly, Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, and Cradle 2 the Grave was sentenced to six months in jail for owing over $400,000 in back child support.

In April 2015, a 21-year-old man claimed he and a friend had approached DMX outside a Route 21 Exxon station in New Jersey, only to have the rapper rob him of $3,200 in cash — funds from his newly cashed paycheck. The MC admitted that he stopped at a Newark gas station following a performance at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on April 5, but had “no recollection” of a robbery or confrontation of any kind.

“I don’t recall any incident happening,” he told TMZ at the time. “I make way more than that during a show. Why would I want that type of trouble for myself?”
