4. Ric Wilson
These days I like to think of rap in these terms B.K. and A.K. meaning before Kanye and after Kanye. After Kanye’s Late Registration changed the idea of what a rapper could be, it helped to spawn a new type of rapper who is quirky, self-confident, and open. Ric Wilson is this new style artist, and his most recent release Negrow Disco embraces this notion. In song “Hang Loose” ft hip-hop legend Chuck D, Wilson says “I don’t chase the wave, I just make the wave.” His originality is what sets him apart from the pack. His sing-songy delivery is easy on the ears and at the same time, you can’t deny the skill. He expresses an intelligence through his lyrics that is purposeful. We are looking forward to seeing how his career progresses over the years.
