Trump’s food stamp cuts will mostly hurt poor White people who voted for him
Donald Trump is continuing to wage a war on the poor. Trump wants to cut the food stamp program known as SNAP. So instead of giving families food stamps, Trump and his administration will seek to give food boxes.
The food boxes would be called “America’s Harvest Box.”
Detailed in Trump’s ridiculous budget, the food box would feature shelf-stable milk, juice, grains, ready-to-eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans, canned meat, poultry or fish, and canned fruits and vegetables.
Trump’s decision would affect 16 million low-income households. But the irony of the proposal is that it would mostly affect the same people who supported him during the presidential election.
Trump’s base was mostly comprised of poor Whites. According to NBC polling, 70 percent of Trump voters did not have a college degree and more than 35 percent had household incomes of $50K or less.
Low-income Whites are also more likely to receive food stamps.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 40.2 percent of SNAP recipients are White, 25.7 percent are Black, 10.3 percent are Hispanic, 2.1 percent are Asian, 1.2 percent are Native American, .7 percent are multiple races, 12.8 percent are race unknown, and 7 percent had no household head listed on the file.
Trump did an amazing job of deceiving poor Whites by making them believe that minorities were taking their jobs. However, Trump will ultimately be the person who takes away their food and health care benefits.
