5. Walter Scott was shot multiple times in the back on April 4, 2015, in North Charleston, South Carolina, following a daytime traffic stop for a broken brake light. When Scott imprudently tried to flee during the stop, North Charleston police officer Michael Slager caught Scott and wrestled him to the ground. After Scott, an unarmed man, freed himself and tried to run away again, he was shot multiple times in the back and died. Slager was convicted in the killing. He is reportedly serving a two-decade sentence at Federal Correctional Institution Englewood, which is just south of Denver, for the April 2015 killing, U.S. Bureau of Prisons records revealed, according to The Post & Courrier.

6. Samuel DuBose: On July 19, 2015, in Cincinnati, Ohio, DuBose, an unarmed black man, was fatally shot by University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing, during a traffic stop for a missing front license plate and a suspended driver’s license. Tensing fired his firearm after DuBose started his car.

7. Jamar Clark: the 24-year-old Black man was shot by Minneapolis Police in Minneapolis after an alleged struggle after he left a fight at a party. Two police officers, Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze, were involved in the shooting and were subsequently placed on paid administrative leave. On March 30, 2016, the Hennepin County attorney announced that no charges would be filed against Ringgenberg and Schwarze. Clark was, of course, unarmed.

8. Sandra Bland: The 28-year-old Black woman who was found hanged in a jail cell on July 13, 2015, in Waller County, Texas, about an hour’s drive west of Houston, three days after being arrested during a traffic stop. The county medical examiner officially listed her death as a suicide.


9. Oscar Grant (no photo available): Who in the Bay Area will soon forget the case of the 22-year-old who was shot and killed early on New Year’s Day, 2009, by Rapid Transit Police officer Johannes Mehserle in Oakland? While Grant laid on the ground and restrained by other offices and handcuffs, Mehserle stood up, grabbed his gun and shot an incapacitated Grant in the back, killing him. Despite video evidence, Mehserle was found not guilty in a 2010 trial. The case was turned into a critically-acclaimed motion picture, Fruitvale Station, starring Michael B. Jordan.
