What young writers are you excited about right now?
I mean Lena Waithe, wow! She is amazing. Chad Sanders, the young man I’m working on this movie with right now that told me there are no more “Lisas,” is amazing. And the thing I love about this generation is that they aren’t waiting. They are creating and producing, getting on-the-job training by going ahead and shooting with their iPhones, etc. right now without waiting for permission from anyone.
What advice would you give to someone who aspires to have a career like yours in television and film?
Do not wait! I grew up in an era where we had to create something and then pitch it and wait for someone to give us the go-ahead. They can connect with a company like CEEK and do put out what. One of my good friends that owns the laugh factory told me Hollywood isn’t bright, you have to chew the food and then put it in their mouth and that’s what we’ve had to do. Now that Hollywood is closed, it’s the time for you to go and create and do what you’ve been wanting to do.
