We find ourselves in a pandemic now, what has been the root of what you see as the problem?
The problem with not having a singular cohesive message is that people will tend to turn to whatever sources that they feel most comfortable with. And in the Black and Brown communities, most of the time, it’s [the] radio or some influencer or a celebrity. And unfortunately, in most instances, they’re not even being used to get the correct information out to communities. In my experiences and working in developing countries during outbreaks and epidemics, most of the time, they had one person that they spoke with that’s the person that we [health professionals] seek out first; because we know the person would be able to take the message to the rest of the community.
