Coach Mark Mayfield shares his philosophy for winning on and off the court

When it comes to protecting yourself at all times physically and mentally, what would you tell your children?

This is all a game and you must play it to win. Don’t let these times distract you. It will pass. Just be ready, when the time passes, that you are on top.

What advice would you give on being responsible for your own dreams?

I had a dream to play college basketball. The first school I went to I was redshirted and the program was canceled the following year. The second school I went to we won district and regional championships, and the following year the program was canceled. The third school I went to, the coach lied to me about scholarship money he promised. Although I got the money, I did not trust him and chose to quit. The fourth school I went to I played all three years and won a national championship. Never give up.

Share one of your fondest memories you’ve experienced with your father, grandfather or father figure.

I can remember my father waking me up early on the weekends to go work out. He showed me the art of shooting and using your left hand. We would often play pickup games. I don’t remember us ever losing.
