Ben & Jerry’s Jabari Paul details how companies can put action behind activism

Corporations are scrambling when it comes to how they communicate their message to the community at this time. How important is it for companies to ensure that their activism continues?

You don’t have to be in a panic when activism is ongoing. A lot of the content we put out is because we built relationships with groups in the movement. We try to speak from a standpoint of our values as a company. We are also constantly figuring out ways to lift voices in the movement. We have a platform that a lot of people don’t have.

I focus on cultivating deep relationships where I have conversations with our partners. That doesn’t happen overnight. We focus on systemic change versus charity. Right now, companies have to be committed to investing in relationship building.

How can CEOs improve their corporate culture?

There is racial justice work we’re known for as a company, but we also focus on racial equity inside of the company. Our CEO has admitted that we have to do a better job. We have been on a journey to try and improve those areas. We have to realize racial diversity is important because thought diversity is important at the company. We want to improve from a racial equity standpoint. And over the next few years, there [will be] more diversity in terms of our vendors, our contractors. There are other parts of the business where a stronger effort must be made in terms of racial equity.
