‘The Oval’ actor Vaughn Hebron recounts getting tapped for role by Tyler Perry

What was your audition for “The Oval” like?

Before I even got the audition, I remember him [Perry] calling me on the phone. He was like, “Vaughn Hebron, this is Tyler Perry, man. How are you doing, young man? I just wanted to call you to get to know you a little bit. I have this project coming out called ‘The Oval,’ and I think you’d be great for one of the characters.” Talking to him personally, business-wise. and getting down to the meat of the character before the audition was an experience in itself. He said, “I do want to see you audition. I want to see what you got. I’ve seen some of your work already, but I want to see what else you can bring to this.” Usually, in an audition, you let it go because you have nothing to lose, and I felt like in this position maybe I do have something to lose so I need to bring it.

What did you learn about yourself when you first started taking classes?

You learn about yourself in acting. You start learning more about your insecurities, your fears because there are scenes and scenarios that a good acting class puts you in. It gives you a chance to see if it’s something that excites you, makes you nervous or that you shy away from because you don’t want to expose yourself so much. I learned a little bit more about my insecurities and fears. Situations that I could avoid in real life I had to face those in classes.
