Charly Palmer’s ‘The Power of Be’ exhibit showcases breathtaking art

Tell us about life as a Spelman professor.

Art is usually and easy elective so I had a lot of students upset with me because I expected them to put in the work. I had to explain I came here to motivate, inspire and teach you what this world is about, and what the art world is about, I take that serious. Don’t send me black kids who aren’t serious or committed, I don’t have that kind time to waste on people who are not willing to do the work.

What’s next?

Changing the Black kids around me. I put all of my energy into us, into my community and my people. I’m no longer looking to be embraced or accepted by them but I’m still trying to convince my people who  sometimes misunderstand my actions. If you know me, you know that everything I do is solely to further us.

Exhibition ends March 27
