Robbie Best looking to portray Black culture in a positive way

How do you want to impact the culture with your creativity and design?
I want to inspire and encourage them to look at themselves in a positive way. We are not in the margins of society and have contributed much to this culture. I concentrate on the black female figure in particular because I recognize that we have been neglected in the Western art canon.

What three artists share a creative kinship with your vision?
Elizabeth’s Catlett’s work focuses on the Black figure — primarily the female. Her focus is on sculpture, printmaking, and other mediums. She elevates the female to a lofty position of grace, power and dignity. Kerry James Marshall’s use of various shades of black paint represents the universality of Black people. He positions them in everyday situations and they embody the concept of everyman. Charles Alston’s work covers the spectrum of various mediums and techniques. We share a love for many different styles while emphasizing the Black culture.

What’s next for you?
I plan to create a space that is like an art incubator where Black female artists can gather to share ideas, techniques and resources. I feel that it is important for Black women to share their talents and mentor other female artists. We need to develop our voices, promote our gaze and empower each other.
