What has been the most challenging moment of your career?
Sitting on unreleased music for two years was really tough but I love what I do so much that I honestly don’t find the hard times that challenging. Coming from a background in punk and post-hardcore bands, going solo and changing my sound was tough. To create a new identity and make sure it is a true representation of your expression and inner self is always a challenge, but at the same time, it’s incredibly enjoyable.
What are your thoughts on the direction the industry is taking?
I don’t think there’s been a more sonically wide-open climate like this in my lifetime. To see artists like Tyler and Billie topping the charts is beautiful. The power is shifting towards the art. My point being that major label talent seems to have more sway with what they can and can’t create artistically and I love that.
What artists inspire you to take it up to the next level?
Frank Ocean.
What’s next for you?
I’m in the middle of the rollout of my project, l’année, where I’m releasing 12 songs in 12 months. After that, you’ll have to wait and see, but I promise it will be interesting.
