NBA YoungBoy is — almost — set to be freed.
On Friday, Oct. 22, 2021, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rapper was granted conditional bond release from jail on federal gun charges. Under the conditions of his release, he’ll be under house arrest in Utah and have to wear an ankle monitor. However, to receive full bond to leave jail, NBA YoungBoy must get bond approval from charges stemming from police finding a gun in his Maybach truck.
NBA YoungBoy, born Kentrell Gaulden, was taken into FBI custody in Los Angeles in March after a brief chase with LAPD.
In September, one of NBA YoungBoy’s fans created an online petition urging President Joe Biden release the 22-year-old rapper from jail. At press time, the petition has over 150,000 signatures.
“We have watched him grow over the years and he has much more time to better himself,” the fan’s petition, listed as “YB Supporter,” reads. “Being granted a release by the president himself would be life-changing and historical. Not only would the rapper be able to be with his family and friends, but he would be able to provide music for his fans and live his life.”
NBA YoungBoy was arrested along with 15 other people in Louisiana in September 2020 at a music video shoot on drug and firearm charges.
NBA YoungBoy is the highest-charting artist globally on YouTube, according to the popular video website. For the week of Oct. 8-14, he had a total of 44.7M views, nine million more than the second-highest charting artist on the platform globally — Drake.
