It has been 20 years since the release of Alicia Keys’ debut album Songs in a Mirror and now the artist is gearing up to drop her eighth studio album, Keys.

Ahead of its release on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, Keys sat down with Speedy Morman of “360 With Speedy Morman” on Monday, Dec. 6 to discuss her career and marriage to her husband Swizz Beatz.

The singer and songwriter revealed that, contrary to what some may believe, her producer husband initially wasn’t her type.

“He definitely gave me the ick. I wasn’t with it. He just wasn’t my vibe,” Keys told Morman when he asked how Swizz Beatz managed to “overcome the ick,” which is a phenomenon where someone you’re dating turns you off to the point of no return.

“He’s pretty loud. He’s pretty over the top. He loves a lot of attention. Everywhere [there are] like a bunch of people,” Keys said as she explained what initially turned her off from her now-husband.

Keys went on to say that she realized she didn’t actually know him and had preconceived notions of him due to what she heard.

“Once I got to know who he actually was, I recognized that I was judging him on someone that I thought he was, not who he actually is. And that’s how the ick tide changed,” Keys said.
