FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Michael Eric Dyson, Ph.D. and rolling out CEO Munson Steed examine the state of Black America
Michael Eric Dyson, Ph.D., recently sat down with rolling out CEO Munson Steed to address the sociopolitical concerns of Black America in an exclusive interview that serves as the global brand’s cover a week before Christmas 2021. The story and interview are both available for viewing on rollingout.com, today, Dec. 17, 2021.
A fitting gift for the African American masses, Dyson’s touches on a myriad of issues that are covered in the extensive interview, much of which are also included in his most recent book, Entertaining Race. Among the topics he addresses via pinpoint queries from Steed are Dave Chappelle’s explosive and poignant stand up in “The Closer,” a myriad of racial profiling incidents that occurred at the hands of overly curious White folks in the past year and a half, Nancy Pelosi’s endorsement of his book and more.
The overarching theme of the book boldly revolves around the idea of Black folks being made to perform for White people, since the dawn of slavery and to the day.
“Like many of the ideas that come to me, I had to go to sleep,” Dyson revealed, explaining the process by which he came up with the book title. “I had to think on it, meditate on it, and then it came to me. That entertaining race performing Blackness in America, entertaining because Black people have had to entertain.
“I opened the book with a story of a young girl about to be enslaved [and] taken on to a ship. Because she refused to perform, she was beat[en] to death … I saw the metaphor of Black America with our refusal to perform. … We are forced to entertain the dominant culture, but we’ve been [also] forced to entertain the idea of race constantly.”
In addition to being a proclaimed author of 24 books, Dyson is a teacher, doctor of philosophy, father, philanthropist and radio host.
