Millions of Californians are furious that the governor signed a statewide indoor mask mandate yet attended an NFL game not wearing one.

Magic Johnson, being the iconic figure that he is, bore the brunt of fan discontent as he and Gov. Gavin Newsom were seen maskless at the NFC championship game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022.

Johnson proudly posted separate photos of himself with Newsom and  San Francisco Mayor London Breed and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. None of them had on a mask.

The state of California instituted a universal indoor mask mandate in December 2020 when COVID-19 variant Omicron exploded across the country, particularly in the Golden State. Public anger intensified when state health leaders extended the mask mandate to Feb. 15, 2022.

Some social media users also illuminated SoFi stadium’s policy as the website states “masks are required for all attendees” and “masks can only be removed to actively eat or drink, after which they must be immediately put back on.”

Because of the seemingly flagrant hypocrisy, some residents went off on the governor and LA mayor, while some understood that all of the celebrities and dignitaries in attendance at the game are vaccinated.
