SoCal civil rights groups to support Brian Flores' lawsuit against NFL

Civil rights organizations in Southern California will host a press conference during Super Bowl weekend in Los Angeles to proclaim their ardent support for fired NFL coach Brian Flores. 

The coalition of Project Islamic Hope, Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable will convene at SoFi Stadium at the intersection of Pincay Drive and  Kareem Court at 11 a.m. PST in the L.A. suburb of Inglewood.


Flores was terminated as the head coach of the Miami of Dolphins after the 2021-22 despite having a winning record during the past two seasons. He filed a federal lawsuit against the league and three teams — the Dolphins, the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants — claiming racist hiring practices.

The civil rights leaders are reportedly going to demand that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell obliterate the Rooney Rule since the process has not produced satisfactory returns. In fact, the number of Black head coaches hired has significantly decreased since its implementation. After Flores’ firing in January 2021, there was only one Black head coach left in the league, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin.
