Tara Roberts and National Geographic go to great depths in new podcast

What lessons did you learn?

While I was working towards my scuba certification, doing dives in Southeast Asia and other locales, and traveling with the divers around the world, I spent a lot of time meditating and building courage to confront this history. I used to be afraid of the pain and horror associated with Black history. But through this process, I discovered that shipwrecks are a way to reframe and heal that past.

What do you want audiences to take away from this program?

I hope the series sparks curiosity in people. These stories have been hidden away for centuries, and it’s time for them to come back into the light. This history is not just Black history, it is world history. The Middle Passage involved four continents and millions of souls, and forever changed the landscape of our planet. I hope the series gives us a way to approach this history through a lens of healing, resilience, and power.  I also hope listeners are motivated to become scuba divers.
