Jermaine Dupri has been in the music industry for a long time, and he’s made some classic hits that still get played to this day. Hip-hop has changed over the years, and Dupri had a few things to say about the current state of the genre in a recent interview with Vibe.

“I feel like hip-hop is definitely hurting and needs reviving,” Dupri said. “I have to go ahead and say this: For the last 20 years, Atlanta’s always had at least five top rappers at one time. Right now, Atlanta’s dropped down to two top artists: Lil Baby and Future.”

Dupri says that rap has become “a little stale,” but that didn’t stop him from making rap records.

“Ludacris, Jeezy, 2 Chainz, Migos, Future, Lil Baby — I mean, at one point, all of this was Atlanta,” Dupri said. “This was where all the top-tier artists came from. I’m not talking about artists that just make records, but No. 1 songs. Artists that people feel like define the game.”

Lil Baby and Future have carried the torch for rap for the past few years. It will be interesting to see how hip-hop evolves in the future.
