DETROIT – The Minerva Education and Development Foundation (MEDF) recently held its 30thanniversary gala, “Thirty and Thriving Together: A Celebration of MEDF’s Legacy in Philanthropy,” that took place on October 29, at the Roostertail in Detroit. This milestone event with nearly 400 attendees honored three decades of dedication to the betterment of Detroit residents, students, and nonprofit organizations. Grantees were also present to celebrate.
For 30 years, MEDF has made a significant impact on the Detroit community by granting nearly $800,000 in scholarships and grants to college and high school students, as well as to nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting Detroit residents, students, and families. Funds raised at “Thirty and Thriving Together” will continue to empower MEDF in its mission to provide opportunities and support for Detroit’s community and future leaders.
“Thirty and Thriving Together,” an unforgettable afternoon, filled with entertainment, recognition, and a renewed commitment to MEDF’s mission. The gala featured comedian Mike Bonner as the Master of Ceremonies, who ensured laughter and joy throughout the event. Attendees enjoyed a captivating musical performance by Musique Noire – Black women musicians who enthralled audiences with their stringed and percussive instruments.
One of the highlights of the evening was a heartfelt presentation of a now posthumous Visionary Award to the first president of MEDF, Patricia L. Solomon, who passed earlier last month. The prestigious award recognized the outstanding contributions to the foundation’s growth and impact made by this founding trustee.
In addition to recognizing the foundation’s pioneers, “Thirty and Thriving Together” included a tribute showcasing the notable scholars and grant awardees who have benefited from MEDF’s support. Among those featured in the video: Aaron Dworkin, founder, and president of the Sphinx Organization; founding MEDF Trustee Charlene Mitchell; and Gloria Butler Miller, named a 2021 Most Notable Board Member by Crain’s Detroit. The video also highlighted the founder of the Phoenix Center, Courtney Smith, whose impactful work benefits teenagers experiencing homelessness.
