Buttah Skin was founded in 2018 to enrich the skin of melanated people. Rolling out sat down with Buttah Skin owner Dorion Renaud and actress and entrepreneur Vanessa Simmons to discuss the product.
What inspired you to create Buttah Skin?
Dorion Renaud: I started the brand because I was having some serious skin care issues that went from high school to college. When I became an adult, I couldn’t find products that suited my skin as an African American, especially as a man, things that addressed problems like hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
I wanted to base the line around shea butter because that’s something that’s so near and dear to our culture.
How did you get involved with the company and what is your favorite product?
Vanessa Simmons: Not only has Dorion been a longtime friend of mine, but I totally believe in Buttah Skin and it makes me feel more comfortable and confident in my skin, even without makeup, which is a big deal because I’m getting older, and you start aging, and the products help to make me feel like [I am] reverse[ing] the aging and just make me feel more confident in my skin.
I can’t live without the vitamin C serum. I travel with it. I use it daily. It’s really good for purifying your skin and just giving you this effortless glow. I get compliments on all the time. I can tell the difference when I’m not using it.
What are your bestselling products?
DR: I’d say our bestselling product is our kit because it comes with everything you need: a cleanser, a vitamin C serum, and the moisturizer of your choice. We try to make Buttah Skin customizable and always say there is complexity in our complexion. Just because you’re Black or you are a person of color doesn’t mean all of our skin is the same. So we have a different moisturizer for all skin types.
Tell us about the Silky Soft Towels.
DR: You don’t want to keep washing your face and using towels, they carry bacteria. Some of the paper towels that we might use are dry and dry your skin out. So I want us to come out with biodegradable towels that you can use after you wash your face that are good for your skin.
They come every month if you get a subscription. So, it’s easy for you. I try to make skin care easy. I think that the towels add ease and less effort to your skin care routine.
