Lashana Lynch used to see fashion as something to just be seen in a “very prestigious magazine.”

The actor — known for her roles in the likes of The Marvels, The Woman King and the James Bond blockbuster No Time To Die — has grown to embrace what she “can do with fashion” rather than simply thinking of it as aspirational. “I’m learning more about how to appreciate what I can do with fashion. When I was younger, I saw fashion as something to be aimed for. It was there — somewhere in a very prestigious magazine that you see on a shelf — you probably won’t get there, but it’s nice to look at,” she said in ELLE.

However, Lynch has reached a point where she is finding different collections and companies that “excite” her.

“Now, I’m learning about different brands, designers, [and fashion] line collabs that actually excite me. They represent me, the British-born Jamaican girl who comes from west London who has a lot to say but wants to be comfortable,” she explained.

When it comes to her own style, the Bob Marley: One Love star joked she has “too many vintage pieces.”

“Well, I’m a vintage baby. Anything between a charity shop and a vintage shop is my friend. I probably have too many vintage pieces … A lot of them are repeats as well, like leather jackets. What I’m learning now is that I need color. I don’t want to be in all black,” Lynch said.

“And I need a comfy shoe. [Doc Martens] are my friend, or a trainer [shoe] with a dress and an oversized blazer,” she added.

The actor has also learned to be more relaxed on glitzy red carpets, especially for her projects.

“I don’t find it as nerve-racking as I previously did,” she revealed. “I think that’s because I’ve ensured that the people I have around me are just zen beings. We play calm music — maybe light a candle — and we eat some food, chat and then get to it. If the red carpet is for a film of mine, I’m excited.”
