The Kansas City Chiefs are once again Super Bowl champions.
The team bested the San Francisco 49ers 25-19 in overtime in Las Vegas in Super Bowl LVIII.
The title is the third championship for quarterback Patrick Mahomes II within the past five years. The 28-year-old and two-time NFL MVP continues to add to his résumé of being one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
At the end of the 4th quarter, after an attempted game-winning pass to Travis Kelce, the Chiefs settled for a field game, which sent the game to overtime. Once overtime began, the 49ers came down the field and made a field goal, forcing the Chiefs into an all-or-nothing drive. After receiving the kickoff, Kansas City began a drive during which they faced a 4th and one. Mahomes responded and delivered with a keeper to keep the drive alive.
Mahomes then ran for another first down to get the Chiefs within the red zone. With a minute and a half remaining, history seemed to be within reach. Mahone threw to Kelce for another first down. Kansas City then won it all with a short touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman and the Chiefs solidified their dynasty.
“It means a ton,” Mahomes said in his postgame interview. “I just have to give God the glory … it’s awesome. It’s legendary.”
Mahomes said it’s the start of a dynasty, but it’s just begun.
