Rae Davenport’s performance in ‘Pretty Woman: The Musical’ was electrifying

“Pretty Woman: The Musical” delivers a dazzling and enchanting experience that, despite some reservations, is undoubtedly a crowd-pleaser. While the overall production may not entirely live up to the iconic romantic comedy it is based on, one shining star elevates the show to new heights—Rae Davenport as Kit De Luca. In Tuesday night’s performance, Davenport’s portrayal of Kit De Luca stole the spotlight. Despite being a supporting character, Davenport’s presence was nothing short of commanding, leaving the audience in awe with her powerful vocals and effortless riffs. As Vivian’s (Julia Roberts character in the original film) best friend and roommate, Davenport brought Kit De Luca to life with a mighty belt that echoed through the theater, earning her many rounds of applause and well-deserved recognition.

The musical, based on the beloved 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, follows the story of Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis. Ellie Baker and Chase Wolfe take on the lead roles, with Baker embodying the iconic Julia Roberts role. The musical successfully captures the essence of the movie, with memorable musical numbers, including the sexy opening dance sequence “Welcome to Hollywood” and the standout performance of “Rodeo Drive” by Rae Davenport.

The production team, under the direction of Jerry Mitchell, has spared no effort in transforming this musical into a Broadway-worthy spectacle. The set design, lighting, sound, and numerous costume changes contribute to the transformation of a 1990s rom-com into a true Cinderella-worthy fairytale.

While the musical may not entirely live up to the cinematic masterpiece, the strong performances and outstanding vocals, particularly by principal actor Davenport and fellow leads Wolfe and Baker, make it a worthwhile experience.
