The hustle of daily life often leads us to make poor choices regarding our health and wellness — and primarily our diets. When convenience becomes the determining factor in what one eats it typically results in the consumption of fast food, processed foods and sugary snacks.  Despite the flurry of dietary trends and conflicting nutrition advice, one cornerstone of health remains undisputed: the importance of fruits in our diet.

Sadly, a startling revelation by government guidelines highlights a crack in our nutritional foundation. A mere 12 percent of adults consume the recommended one and a half to two cups of fruit daily. It’s time we rediscover the fruits that taste great and shift us toward a more excellent life by fortifying our health.

Fruit is full of fiber, essential vitamins, minerals and a bounty of antioxidants and protective substances that shield us from chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer and even the unseen battles against mood disorders like depression and anxiety.

The most powerful fruit

The humble blueberry is number one. Its color comes courtesy of anthocyanins — a potent antioxidant. Studies have consistently shown that a diet rich in these bite-sized wonders can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, boost cognitive performance and even aid in maintaining a healthy weight.

Berries and avocado

Strawberries offer a day’s worth of vitamin C in just eight pieces, alongside the promise of reduced inflammation and improved cholesterol levels. With their fiber-rich profile, raspberries support our gut health and protect our cells from damage with their high antioxidant content. On toast or not, creamy avocado is considered a heart-healthy snack, which plays a pivotal role in heart health and weight management.

Grow your gut

These fruits are unsung heroes in our quest for longevity and well-being: dates, prunes, kiwi, cherries, bananas, apples, grapefruit, pomegranate, pears, blackberries and mangoes. Incorporating a variety of these fruits into our daily diet ensures essential nutrients and, more importantly, creates a diverse gut microbiome, the cornerstone of a healthy gut and, therefore, a healthy life. The colors, textures and flavors of fruits contain nature’s prescription to help fend off diseases and nourish our bodies.

A fruitful life

As we navigate nutritional advice, let’s anchor ourselves in the simple yet powerful truth: fruits are the keystones to a life lived long and well. Let’s not just eat to live but thrive — and remember, in this colorful selection of fruits lies the facial glow you want now and the longer life you hope to enjoy later.
