There have been many methods of losing weight throughout the years, whether it’s a specific diet, exercise, or the latest sensation of Ozempic.

A new study has revealed a new way to get slimmer: A spoonful of vinegar.

BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, & Health published research from a study of Lebanese teenagers and young adults who drank up to one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar daily for 12 weeks. The participants dropped an average of 15 pounds. The participants also had lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and overall levels of fat at the end of the three-month period.

Health points out that while previous research showed the correlation of vinegar and losing weight in older adults, this was the first time the study was done on younger people. The study was done to help find solutions for obesity outside of using drugs.

This particular study, published by BMJ, had 120 participants aged 12 to 25. The average starting weight of the participants was around 173 pounds. The group that drank 15 milliliters of vinegar daily lost the most weight and weighed an average of 155 pounds. The group that drank 10 ml weighed an average of 159 pounds, and the group that drank 5 ml dropped to an average of 163 pounds. All three groups had a decline in waist and hip circumference and BMI.

Doctors told Health to be cautious of the results because we don’t know the Lebanese lifestyle, and 12 weeks might not be long enough to reach a conclusion.

Consuming apple cider vinegar on a consistent basis can have harmful effects on teeth and disrupt your digestive system. It can also conflict with taking medications like insulin or laxatives.

Besides apple cider vinegar intake, taking in fewer calories than you burn is a way to go. You can burn more calories by changing your diet and exercising more.
