Chicago born actor, producer, and writer T’Shaun Barrett is making his way in Hollywood while working on both sides of the camera.
His resume includes the role of Jon in the long-running medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy,” appearances in films like Barbershop 2: Back In Business, and a number of national commercials as well.
Barrett’s latest project is the comical spoof of the black church genre, Not Another Church Movie, that harkens back to classic films like Airplane and I’m Gonna Get You Sucka. Starring Jamie Foxx and Tisha Campbell, the film will feel familiar to modern-day movie fans because it pokes fun at the films of a certain well-known media mogul.
Please tell us about your latest project, Not Another Church Movie?
The movie is a loving, but hilarious spoof of a number of Tyler Perry films. I actually play two characters in the movie. My character, Darnell, is a spoof of the character, Charles, played by Steve Harris in Diary of a Mad Black Woman. And I also play the character, Tallahassee. who is a spoof of Shemar Moore’s character, Orlando, from the same movie.
How difficult was it to pull double duty as an actor and associate producer on the film?
It was super difficult but because it was a comedy, it was also a lot of fun. It was definitely a lot to juggle because working on both sides of the camera, there is always something to do. I wouldn’t trade it though. I had a great time working on the project.
Can you talk about the atmosphere on the set and working with such a hilarious ensemble cast?
Constant laughs throughout the filming process. The atmosphere was just pure comedy. Even if something serious happened, we still found a way to make it funny.
What is your best advice to young actors?
Study the greats. Work at your craft.
What’s coming up next for you?
My next project is a movie called 1992 that will be in theaters soon starring Tyrese Gibson, Ray Liotta and Scott Eastwood. I do have a small acting part in the film but on this one I took on a bigger role behind the scenes as a co-producer. It’ll be out soon so stay tuned for it!
