On July 20, 2024, Chicagoans came out to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Millennium Park. Chicago’s very own Grammy, Emmy and Academy Award-winning rapper and actor Common performed with the backing of the Grant Park Orchestra The city had been buzzing about this performance since it was announced at the top of the year. The turnout to the free event was in the thousands as the lawn of Millennium Park was filled with lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and charcuterie boards waiting for Chicago’s son to take the stage.
It was fitting for Common to be the one to celebrate this 20th anniversary as he is an accomplished son of the city and continues to represent his home all over the world. The concert was a masterclass in artistry as the backdrop of the Grant Park Orchestra and Common’s live band permeated the atmosphere with a spirit of love and accomplishment. The diverse audience hung onto Commons every word as he performed his set effortlessly. He kicked his set off with his new song “Dreaming” from his latest release with legendary producer Pete Rock, The Auditorium, Vol1. Pete Rock was in the building to witness the performance along with Chicago’s mayor Brandon Johnson. As a surprise for the evening, EGOT, Jennifer Hudson joined Common on stage to perform “Glory” and “A God (There is).” Hudson’s powerful voice brought the audience to their feet and they showered the Chicago native with love and applause. De La Soul fresh off their performance from Pitchfork and Bilal were also surprise guests who helped to raise the level of the celebrations. The night was capped off by fireworks in the city’s sky.
Millennium Park was created in 2004 as a public park located in the Loop area of downtown Chicago. It was created to celebrate the third millennium. Millennium Park is one of Chicago’s most popular tourist destinations that features Cloud Gate most popularly known as “The Bean,” Crown Fountain and ample green space for residents and tourists to enjoy. Twenty years later the summer programs and concerts are held at the Pritzker Pavilion that sits on the grounds of the park.
