Social media was floored when the fiancée of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas presented him with an engagement ring at a party in Paris.
The girlfriend, Melli Monaco, shocked Arenas when she had waitresses walk up to their private VIP section with faux flames shooting from bottles with the message that read: “Men wear engagement rings, too.”
Arenas was flummoxed by the message, and then he looked to his right at his woman who was rocking to the music and holding a small ring box.
There was a pregnant pause as the host of the “No Chill with Gilbert Arenas” podcast stared at what was inside the box for a long while, as if he couldn’t comprehend what was inside of it. Arenas then closed his eyes and flashed a toothy grin.
Once the magical moment marinated in his spirit, Arenas began smiling and got demonstrative as he held his hand out for Monaco to slip the band on his wedding finger. He then got up to excitedly show off the gold bling to his friends.
To be sure, Arenas had already done the hard part. Days before, Arenas walked with Monaco to the Eiffel Tower in Paris during the 2024 Olympics. Once they arrived at the internationally famous monument, Arenas dropped to one knee and popped the question.
Arenas shared the moment on Instagram to his 1 million followers, admitting that he was “so nervous” that he “answered yes for her” and is “technically engaged” to himself.
Fans conveyed their giddiness over the photogenic couple’s engagement in the comments section:
“Gil done found somebody just as unpredictable as he is. Both of them a lil bit off.”
“This is cute. I bought my husband an engagement ring, too, and he loved it. And I know several men who started wearing a ring when they got engaged.”
“Now this was cute bc he already proposed to her!! BUT y’all women that’s out here proposing to men first that ain’t cute.”
“Awww how sweet she bought him a ring with HIS money.”
One person summarized the opposition, saying, “Spoiling your man & showing appreciation are now seen as desperation. Y’all miserable and/or broke. I’ll be praying for y’all.”
