Rapper ScarLip has recently taken to social media to voice her frustrations with M&T Bank, alleging racial profiling during a banking transaction. This incident has sparked conversations about the ongoing issues of discrimination faced by African Americans in financial institutions.

The Incident

During an Instagram Live session, ScarLip recounted her experience at M&T Bank, where an employee refused to process her transaction without providing any explanation. “Yo M&T bank is racist as fuck,” she stated, expressing her disbelief at being profiled.

Despite presenting her social security card and ID, ScarLip was met with resistance. She questioned the clerk, asking, “Why you not tryna let me make a transfer?” The clerk reportedly expressed discomfort with the transaction and demanded further justification for the transfer, even after ScarLip explained it was for her business.

Threat of Legal Action

Feeling unjustly treated, ScarLip threatened to sue M&T Bank if she did not receive a satisfactory explanation for the refusal to allow her access to her funds. She also mentioned her intention to withdraw all her money and take it to a different bank.

A Pattern of Discrimination

This incident is not isolated. In 2022, acclaimed director Ryan Coogler faced a similar situation at a bank, where staff mistakenly believed he was attempting to rob them. Coogler, who had entered the bank wearing shades and a mask, handed a teller a note requesting a cash withdrawal. The teller, deeming the request suspicious, called the authorities, leading to a distressing encounter for Coogler.

Coogler later addressed the incident, stating, “This situation should never have happened. However, Bank of America worked with me and addressed it to my satisfaction and we have moved on.” His experience highlights the broader issue of how African Americans are often treated with suspicion in financial settings.

Conclusion

ScarLip’s allegations against M&T Bank shed light on the persistent issue of racial profiling within the banking system. As more individuals share their experiences, it becomes increasingly important for financial institutions to address these concerns and ensure equitable treatment for all customers.
