In a shocking incident that underscores the ongoing threat of domestic terrorism, a Florida man was arrested last month after authorities discovered a cache of unregistered firearms and a disturbing list of potential targets. The suspect, 41-year-old John Lapinski, was taken into custody on Halloween in Margate, Florida, approximately 40 miles north of Miami.
Details of the arrest
Lapinski’s arrest stemmed from a report of shots fired at around 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 31. Upon arrival, Margate police officers found that Lapinski was the shooter. He was subsequently taken into custody and transported for a mental evaluation. No injuries were reported during the incident.
Weapons and ammunition found
Authorities discovered an alarming array of weapons in Lapinski’s possession. According to a factual proffer filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Marc Anton, the items included: an AR-15 platform rifle, a Black Aces Tactical FD 12 shotgun, two semiautomatic handguns, body armor, smoke grenades, suspected silencers, an extensive amount of ammunition, spent shell casings and a homemade target.
These findings alone paint a picture of a man potentially poised to commit acts of violence.
Target list raises alarm
Even more concerning is the list of targets that was allegedly found among Lapinski’s belongings. This list reportedly included: Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., a synagogue, a Jewish cemetery, a Jewish sandwich shop and parks and schools described using derogatory terms for Black individuals.
One entry on the list alarmingly stated, “Stalk Jewish parks.” Such explicit threats against specific communities highlight the serious implications of Lapinski’s actions.
Past criminal history
Lapinski’s history with law enforcement is equally troubling. He has previous convictions, including two felonies for resisting an officer with violence in 2005. Furthermore, he was under a restraining order stemming from a domestic violence case in 2017, which legally prohibited him from possessing firearms and ammunition.
Community response
In light of these events, Moskowitz expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their swift action. He emphasized the importance of safety for all families, regardless of political affiliations. His statement on Nov. 8 highlighted a collective concern for community safety in the face of rising threats.
Upcoming legal proceedings
Lapinski is currently being held without bail and faces federal charges for being a felon in possession of a firearm and possessing an unregistered gun suppressor. A detention hearing is scheduled for Nov. 27, where further details about his case will be addressed.
